The dark theory suggests that ‘Three Blind Mice’ originated as a coded reference to Queen Mary I’s persecution of Protestant clergy in the 1550s. According to this interpretation, the ’three blind mice’ represented Protestant bishops Hugh Latimer, Nicholas Ridley, and Thomas Cranmer—known as the Oxford Martyrs—who were executed for heresy.
